We are honored to introduce you to the Nevada Latino Empowerment Organization (LEON),
a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to mobilizing and empowering the Latino community in Nevada. As the Chair and Vice-Chair of LEON, we are excited to share our vision for fostering greater civic engagement and enhancing the socio-political influence of Latinos across our state.
Since 2007, our elected leaders have imagined growing the Latino footprint among public servants. We’ve successfully grown from 2 Hispanic members in the state legislature to 8, yet there is still more to do. Latinos comprise 30.3% of Nevada’s population and 21% of all eligible voters, but only represent 14% of our state legislators. Across the state, there are still municipalities and levels of government where there are no Latinos in elected or appointed office.
LEON fills a critical gap in our fight for an inclusive democracy in Nevada. We seek a Nevada where Latinos drive our state forward, and where the people and policies reflect our progressive values and needs. We are forming this new organization led by Latinos, for Latinos, to build the next generation of civic and political leadership.
Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable Nevada for all.
Sincerely,
State Senator Fabian Doñate
Chair, Latino Empowerment Organization of Nevada
City Councilman Miguel Martinez
